GIZ is a federally owned organisation that supports the German Government in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development.

In early 2010 I was commissioned to produce a book to give an overview of GIZ activities in Northern Afghanistan, containing a series of photographs documenting their development projects.

These programmes are designed to develop the local economy and revive traditional craftsmanship using a sustainable approach that allows their efforts to have a long-term impact. While the production of carpets, jewellery, and leather products are already part of the Afghan economy, these programmes are aimed to enhance the artisans’ skills and create new jobs.

The primary goal of this book is to illustrate what is being done with a fresh look, focusing on the individual people, their daily struggle and the hope that these types of projects have brought to their lives and their communities.
