The majority of Italian troops in Afghanistan are based in Herat, a city in the west of the country, adjacent to the Iranian border.

Most of these soldiers do not experience much of real life in Herat or even see the territory for themselves. Flown to a far away planet, to a country that could be anywhere, they live in fortified bases where their life is similar to the one they have at home.

Professional soldiers and experts of the latest war technologies they leave the bases only flying choppers or driving armoured vehicles.

These soldiers see Afghanistan through bulletproof glass or from the green images coming from the spy planes. Outside, the Afghans still live in mud houses, with no electricity or running water.

The enemies are invisible and incomprehensible; they belong to a different century, and therefore are even more scary.
